NFL

  • Packers sign G Elgton Jenkins to four-year, $68M extension
    • Jenkins is one of the game’s top guards, so it makes sense for him to be compensated as such. Also, the Mississippi State product is just 26, so it’s not like he’ll decline any time soon.

  • Browns sign T Jack Conklin to four-year, $60M extension
    • Conklin isn’t a top tier tackle, but this salary is suitable for a player of his caliber. For Cleveland’s sake, hopefully Conklin stays healthy, because he’s a solid right tackle when in uniform.

  • Former Clemson QB DJ Uiagalelei transfers to Oregon State
    • Oregon State, going 10-3, had a nice season in 2022, and there’s a chance Uiagalelei may be able to propel them even further. The catch, though, is the former Clemson signal-caller will have to beat out Ben Gulbranson for the starting gig, which he should be able to do.

MLB

  • Blue Jays receive: Daulton Varsho
  • Diamondbacks receive: Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel
    • It’s rare a trade works out like this, but it feels as if both clubs made out like bandits. Moreno is a huge loss, but the Jays have the catching depth to facilitate a move like this. Varsho is a big-time talent, so Moreno and Gurriel shouldn’t be missed too much by Toronto.
      Grade: B+
    • Arizona had sort of a glut of outfielders prior to this move, so moving Varsho makes some sense. With that said, it’ll obviously be harder for the Snakes to compete in 2023 following this transaction. That shouldn’t cause too many people in Arizona to lose sleep, though, as Moreno is a great young piece to add to any franchise.

  • Giants sign RF Michael Conforto to two-year, $36M contract
    • Even despite the fact Conforto can opt out after year one, this is solid value for San Francisco. Conforto is a solid, and borderline good hitter, which should suit the Giants’ lineup well. The only concern with signing Conforto is that he missed all of 2022 due to injury.
      Grade: B
  • Phillies sign RP Craig Kimbrel to one-year, $10M contract
    • This is a good add. Kimbrel’s output has been way more spotty in recent years than it was earlier in his career, but he’s still capable of being a lockdown closer. After all, as recently as the first half of 2021, Kimbrel looked like one of the game’s top pitchers, which is surely what Philadelphia is hoping to get out of the 34-year-old. Even if Kimbrel throws like he did in 2022, this contract won’t look too bad for the Phillies.

  • Giants sign RP Taylor Rogers to three-year, $33M contract
    • This deal feels a bit rich, but I suppose it matches the current going rate for relievers. Rogers is a solid reliever, at that, and was much better than his 4.76 ERA last season would indicate.
      Grade: C+
