MLB

  • Rockies 7, Red Sox 6
    • It feels like Elias Diaz is heading towards one of the more improbable All-Star Game selections in recent years. The 32-year-old catcher, entering 2023, had just 42 career home runs and an OPS south of .700, but after going 2-5 with three RBIs last night, Diaz playing in the Midsummer Classic as Colorado’s representative seems likely.
  • Yankees 7, Mets 6
    • There’ve been countless instances this season where it’s felt like the 31-36 Mets hit rock bottom, yet New York has continued to find ways to one-up itself. Max Scherzer, 38, has pitched to his age this season, and has a 4.45 ERA after allowing six runs last night. The former ace has a $43.3 million player option for 2024 that seems like a good bet to be picked up at this point.
  • Twins 7, Brewers 5
    • Milwaukee is fading fast. The 34-33 Brewers have lost five in a row, but due to playing in the lousy NL Central, are just a game back of the first-place Pirates. Heck, things are so bad at the moment for the Brewers that Devin Williams allowed four runs and secured zero outs in this contest.
  • Giants 11, Cardinals 3
    • Lately, Nolan Arenado has been the only saving grace for the last-place Cardinals. This month, the seven-time All-Star is slashing .400/.455/.825. St. Louis needs to get its third baseman some help — and fast — or it’s going to end up being the most disappointing season for the Cardinals in ages.
  • Cubs 11, Pirates 3
    • Nobody in their right mind would call the 29-37 Cubs a good team, but Chicago does lead the NL Central in run differential, and definitely still has life in the race. In fact, rearranging the NL Central teams in any order would be reasonable at this point, because it’s hard to say who the division’s top team is.
