Cubs 9, Cardinals 1
The Cubs’ position in the NL Central is starting to even out. For awhile, Chicago maintained the division’s only positive run differential, but it wasn’t translating to wins. That’s changed of late, as the Cubs have won nine of 10 and are just three games back of the division leading Reds. We still have over three months for the NL Central to sort itself out, but it wouldn’t be surprising at all if the Cubs finished in first place.
If this is Adam Wainwright’s final season, it probably won’t be a storybook one. After getting shelled for seven earned runs in this game, the 41-year-old’s ERA rose to 6.56. Wainwright has obviously accomplished a lot as a Cardinal, so the team probably won’t pull the plug on him, but he needs to be better the rest of the way.
