Chargers sign QB Justin Herbert to five-year, $262.5 million contract extension

The total amount of this contract surpasses the deals for Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts, but this still feels low. Part of the reason for this pact coming in lower than expected, at least on a per-year basis, is because it’s only for five years. It’s quite possible Herbert opted for less money in exchange for a chance to yet again reset the market later this decade. Both parties should be pleased with this agreement, and now Los Angeles can focus on surrounding its franchise quarterback with a better and more dependable supporting cast.

Cowboys sign CB Trevon Diggs to five-year, $97 million contract extension

Diggs is an opportunistic and, at times, risky player, but he’ll likely end up being worth this contract. Relative to other positions, cornerbacks are a bit underpaid when you factor in their value, so Diggs making under $20 million per year is a decent bargain for Dallas. This deal will become even more of a bargain if Diggs can return to his 2021 form, when he was a First-team All-Pro cornerback and led the NFL in interceptions.

NBA

Celtics sign SF Jaylen Brown to five-year, $304 million contract extension

At first glance, this looks like a lot of money for a player like Brown, and that’s because it is. This is the largest contract in NBA history, and it’s fair to doubt whether Brown is worthy of such an honor. The Celtics’ wing is an excellent player, and has made linear improvements throughout his tenure in Boston, but he’ll probably be overpaid for most, if not all of this contract. Still, the Celtics’ hands were tied in these negotiations, and basically either had to pay or trade Brown. Trading key players can get messy, so I can’t exactly blame Boston for inking the 26-year-old to this pact, but that doesn’t mean the front office should go out celebrating this headline, either. With Brown in tow for the foreseeable future, though, the Celtics should continue to be contenders.
