Cowboys sign OT Terence Steele to five-year, $86.8 million contract extension

The Cowboys are clearly betting on Steele, who’s coming off a season-ending knee injury, to continue improving, because this is too much money otherwise. Steele is just 26, so the idea of him getting better isn’t a crazy one, but this deal will make it harder for Dallas to pay Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons when that time comes. In the immediate term, though, everyone in Dallas should be happy, setting the stage for a potentially great Cowboys season.

Rutgers 24, Northwestern 7

It might take a long time for Northwestern to recover from firing Pat Fitzgerald. The Wildcats likely would’ve been bad this season had they retained the long-time head coach, but now it’s hard to see even three wins on the team’s schedule. If Northwestern is indeed victorious at any point this year, it’ll probably be due to the senior linebacker duo of Bryce Gallagher and Xander Mueller, which combined for 27 tackles in this game.

Oregon State 42, San Jose State 17

DJ Uiagalelei ran out his welcome at Clemson, but if yesterday was any indication, then maybe the signal-caller just needed a change of scenery. Uiagalelei picked apart the Spartans’ defense in this contest, going 20-25 for 239 yards and three touchdowns. It wasn’t just Uiagalelei that was effective for Oregon State, though, as talented running back Damien Martinez ran for 145 yards.

Each game is obviously its own separate entity, so it’s hard to compare two of them, but Oregon State and USC have both faced San Jose State this season, and USC allowed 28 points, while Oregon State held the Spartans to just 17 — on the road.

San Jose State has had a brutal opening to its season with matchups against two talented Pac-12 opponents, but it should be able to get in the win column next week versus Cal Poly.
