UCLA hires DeShaun Foster as head coach

It’s become increasingly clear that all was not right between UCLA and Chip Kelly. First, Kelly left the Bruins to take the Ohio State offensive coordinator job — a conspicuous move for a sitting Big Ten head coach. Now, UCLA is hiring Foster, a former member of Kelly’s staff, but the antithesis of him as a coach. Kelly is well known as a strategist and play-caller, but Foster should assume more of a CEO-type role with the program, invigorating the Bruins’ recruiting efforts with his local ties. The former NFL running back has never been a head coach, so there’s obvious risk associated with this move, but UCLA needed to take a swing with this hire, and this move fits that bill.
