Dolphins sign WR Jaylen Waddle to three-year, $84.75 million contract extension

The wide receiver market is getting at least a bit out of control, and regression feels possible at some point, but clearly not yet. This is … a lot …. of money for Waddle, a talented 25-year-old pass catcher, but not in contention for best at the position. Across the three extension years, Waddle is guaranteed $76 million — an exorbitant percentage of the deal’s total amount. As we all know, though, the cap is rising at a speedy rate, so perhaps this pact will wind up looking normal compared to those signed by Waddle’s peers.

BYU transfer SF Jaxson Robinson commits to Kentucky

The offensive-minded Robinson started just six games for BYU in 2024, but make no mistake — the swingman would boost the fortunes of any team in the country. Mark Pope’s first roster in Lexington is full of recognizable names from other programs — Lamont Butler, Kerr Kriisa, Koby Brea and Andrew Carr — but it’ll fall on the former BYU head coach to tie the talents together and make them fit, something John Calipari struggled to do in his later years with the Wildcats. Robinson and his 14.2 points per game last season will give Pope a familiar face to work with.

Brewers 6, Cubs 4

The Cubs have drifted up and down the standings between hot and cold stretches, but the current result — a 28-29 record — is an accurate representation of the team. One of Chicago’s top relievers, Mark Leiter Jr., has also fallen victim to inconsistency, seeing his ERA increase from 0.90 to 3.68 in just over a week.

Twins 7, Royals 6

I might be crazy, but I still think the Twins will win the AL Central. Minnesota is six games back in the division and is far behind Cleveland and Kansas City in run differential, but it’s still May, and the Twins’ strong collection of players will enable the team to make a push in the regular season’s final four months. One of those players, Griffin Jax, has been excellent out of the bullpen for Minnesota, as he picked up his 10th hold yesterday.

Rays 6, Athletics 5

Tampa Bay’s offense is down this season, but Isaac Paredes has done some heavy lifting with the bat to this point. The third baseman went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in this game, upping his OPS to .892. If the Rays get a few other players going — see: Arozarena, Randy — Tampa Bay will seriously contend for a wild-card berth.
