MLB

Brewers 5, Blue Jays 4

The 40-28 Brewers are very adept at winning close games, a trend that’s been in place for a few years. Much of the credit in previous seasons went to Craig Counsell, but perhaps it was misplaced, at least to a degree. Pat Murphy has done a good job in his first year in the managerial post, and, of course, plenty of acclaim needs to go to the team’s players — the ones that have been the common denominators in Milwaukee’s success in nail-biters.

George Springer has fallen off a cliff. The outfielder was a down-ballot MVP candidate for much of his time with the Astros, and while his play had dipped in recent seasons, he’s reached a new low in 2024. After a 0-for-4 day in this tilt, Springer is hitting just .198 — a far cry from his mark when he was one of the game’s most feared leadoff men.

Twins 17, Rockies 9

At first glance, you’d think this game was placed at Coors Field, not Target Field. The offensive-minded Twins posted 24 hits in this contest, including five from Carlos Correa — a career high for the potential Hall of Famer. 2023 was the worst season of the shortstop’s career, but he’s bounced back this year. It’ll need to stay that way for Minnesota to keep pace in a surprisingly competitive AL Central.

Blue Jays receive: Braydon Fisher
Dodgers receive: Cavan Biggio

Toronto designated the struggling Biggio for assignment last week, so receiving anything in return for the utility player is a win, I suppose. Fisher has struck out and walked a ton of batters this season in the minors, but has posted a 5.68 ERA.

The bottom part of the Dodgers’ order has been atrocious this season, so Biggio, even with a .200/.323/.291 line, could serve as an upgrade for Los Angeles thanks to his versatility. Chris Taylor, in particular, could stand to lose playing time to the Dodgers’ newest acquisition.

Blue Jays Grade: C
Dodgers Grade: B-
