Dolphins sign CB Jalen Ramsey to three-year, $72.3 million contract extension

This feels unnecessary. I’ve said it over and over again — cornerbacks are underpaid relative to wide receivers — but Ramsey shouldn’t represent the top of the market at the position, at least not at this stage of his tremendous career. The 29-year-old is in decline and the Dolphins will probably come to regret this extension. For the time being, though, Ramsey forms a strong cornerback trio in Miami with Kendall Fuller and Kader Kohou. In 2023, Ramsey totaled 22 tackles and three interceptions in 10 games.

Steelers sign TE Pat Freiermuth to four-year, $48.4 million contract extension

This deal is a projection more than anything, as Freiermuth hasn’t been worth this money — yet. The 25-year-old has certainly flashed, however, most notably during a strong 2022 campaign, when he registered 63 receptions for 732 yards and two touchdowns. The Steelers are limited on weapons, so the tight end should play a large role this season and beyond.

Cavaliers sign C Tristan Thompson to one-year, $2.02 million contract

The 33-year-old Thompson in on his last legs, but he turned in decent minutes for the Cavaliers last season, while also maintaining a strong locker-room presence. The post player’s performance will continue to decline, but Cleveland is hoping everything Thompson offers will be worth a roster spot. The long-time Cavalier averaged 3.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game last season.

Yankees 3, Cubs 0

Luis Gil’s season has been full of peaks and valleys — to be expected for a young pitcher — but the highs have outweighed the lows. For New York to go deep in the postseason, that’ll need to remain the case. Yesterday, Gil put together six scoreless frames, improving him to 13-6.

Chicago’s bats had been sizzling entering this contest, scoring 10-plus runs in six of 13 prior games, but that hot streak ended with a murmur. For the Cubs to keep scoring runs, Isaac Paredes needs to hit better in a Chicago uniform. The third baseman continued his struggles since the trade deadline in this tilt, finishing 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
