Five-star DT Justus Terry commits to Texas
Well, that was unexpected. Just about everyone predicted that Terry would commit to Georgia, adding an elite defensive lineman to yet another star-studded defensive class for Kirby Smart. In today’s recruiting climate, however, money talks, and Texas has plenty of it. As a result, the Longhorns add 2025’s No. 10 recruit to their top-ranked class.

Guardians sign SP Shane Bieber to one-year, $14 million contract
I can’t believe the Guardians agreed to this contract. Yes, Bieber is an accomplished former Cy Young winner, but the 29-year-old is recovering from Tommy John surgery and isn’t expected to return until midseason. To make matters worse, Bieber has a $16 million player option for 2026 — a last resort for him in the event his rehab or return doesn’t go as planned.
There’s more. As a low-budget franchise, Cleveland isn’t in a position to take chances like this or offer goodwill to its players. This feels like the latter. Bieber is 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA over his career, but there’s no guarantee he’ll come close to those numbers upon returning to the mound. The last time we saw the right-hander in 2023, he was merely solid, not elite, as a starter.

Rays sign C Danny Jansen to one-year, $8.5 million contract
This is a rather large one-year commitment for a small-market club like the Rays, but Jansen fills a glaring need for Tampa Bay. As a group, Rays catchers have struggled at the plate for years, so the franchise’s newest addition will help on that front, even if Jansen was plagued by a down year in 2024. The 29-year-old sports a respectable career slash line of .220/.308/.419.
