Red Sox sign SP Patrick Sandoval to two-year, $18.25 million contract

There are worthwhile risks and then there’s this. Sandoval flashed in from 2021-22 with the Angels, but hasn’t been the same since, pitching to a 5.08 ERA over 16 starts last season. Moreover, the 28-year-old is recovering from Tommy John surgery, making a 2025 return questionable.

If the left-hander indeed doesn’t pitch again until 2026, Boston will be paying a hefty price for one season from an average starter. There’s always a chance Sandoval rediscovers his top form and the Red Sox benefit from this pact, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
