49ers promote Klay Kubiak to offensive coordinator

This doesn’t change much for the 2025 49ers — Kyle Shanahan will still be the offensive play-caller — but there’s some significance behind this promotion. For starters, San Francisco hasn’t had an offensive coordinator since 2021, when Mike McDaniel held the title. McDaniel, of course, parlayed that role into a head coaching post with the Dolphins. It’s no lock that Kubiak repeats that ascendence, but it’s a definite possibility, especially considering his family’s roots throughout the NFL.

White Sox sign SP Martin Perez to one-year, $5 million contract

At the very least, Perez offers the White Sox credibility, right? That might be about it, though the 33-year-old did pitch to a 3.46 ERA after being traded to the Padres last season. If the left-hander maintains that effectiveness, he should be a strong trade candidate for what projects to be another bad White Sox team.

Nationals sign SS Amed Rosario to one-year, $2 million contract

Rosario was an above-average regular from 2021-22 with the Guardians, but his star has fizzled since. While still possessing good speed and solid bat-to-ball skills, the 29-year-old figures to factor in as a utility man for the Nationals.

We’ve seen players sign one-year deals in recent years — Jurickson Profar comes to mind — and turn into successful reclamation projects, but Rosario will need to rediscover his power stroke for that to occur. The infielder hit just three homers in 2024.
