Maryland hires Buzz Williams as head coach

Williams must like moving, because the 52-year-old is king of the lateral move. From 2008-2014, Williams was the head coach at Marquette, and then departed for Virginia Tech. Weird, right? But at that point, Williams changing jobs wasn’t a trend — at least not yet. After five seasons in Blacksburg, Williams then took the Texas A&M job. Now, the coaching nomad is heading to Maryland.

That’s quite the journey. Williams, once he begins coaching the Terrapins, will have spent the last 15-plus years at four separate programs, all of similar prestige. Of course, if you want to nitpick, the Maryland job is certainly better than the Virginia Tech job, but it’s not a sizeable gap, so the point stands.

In terms of the ramifications of this move, Maryland gets an adequate — at a minimum — replacement for Kevin Willard. Williams leaving College Station is a bit quizzical, but there are normally circumstances behind the scenes that we’re not privy to. Texas A&M now has a massive head coaching void to fill, though the Aggies job should be attractive to prospective candidates.
