49ers sign QB Brock Purdy to five-year, $265 million contract extension

San Francisco’s competitive advantage is over. After selecting Purdy with the final pick of the 2022 draft, the 49ers quickly realized they had one of the NFL’s best bargains on their hands. To its credit, San Francisco took advantage of that, appearing in the NFC Championship in 2022 and the Super Bowl in 2023. Unfortunately, however, rostering Purdy on a cheap deal hasn’t resulted in a Lombardi Trophy for the franchise, though there is one year remaining on the 25-year-old’s rookie contract.

The outlook for the organization moving forward isn’t as rosy as it was when it drafted Purdy. An era of potential mediocrity may have already kicked off, as the 49ers finished 6-11 in 2024. Sure, a litany of injuries played a role, but a sizeable exodus hit the roster this offseason, mainly due to forecasting this Purdy extension. Roster building was easy in recent seasons for San Francisco. That is no longer the case.

Regardless, that doesn’t make this a bad deal. Purdy has been one of the better starting quarterbacks in the league over his first three seasons, particularly in 2023. In that year, the Iowa State product recorded 4,280 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. The signal-caller regressed a tad last season, but that may’ve been due to a battered supporting cast. This is a massive contract, though, and it’ll take a lot for Purdy to live up to it. I’d bet on the 25-year-old, however. He’s already beaten the odds once, so why not again?
