MLB

Brewers receive: 1B Andrew Vaughn

White Sox receive: SP Aaron Civale

This one came together fast. On Thursday, Civale requested a trade from the Brewers after losing his spot in the starting rotation. On the surface, a player of Civale’s caliber shouldn’t have the authority to ask for a trade, but the 30-year-old is impending free agent. The right-hander clearly wants to showcase himself as a starter for prospective clubs this winter, and it’s hard to blame him.

With his request, Civale set himself up to be sent anywhere, but he probably didn’t have 23-46 White Sox in mind. This landing spot isn’t all that undesirable, however, as Chicago will give Civale what he wants: an opportunity to start. In theory, this trade could benefit both team and player, as the White Sox could flip the righty in July if he fares well over the next month or so with the organization.

For that to happen, Civale will have to improve, at least slightly. He’s pitched to a 4.91 ERA across five starts with the Brewers this season, and while that’ll cut it with the White Sox, it won’t cut it with other clubs looking to upgrade their starting staffs.

In fulfilling Civale’s demand, Milwaukee is taking a flyer on Vaughn, once a top prospect. Outside of a decent 2023 campaign, the 27-year-old’s big-league time has been far from a success. This season has been particularly rough for Vaughn, as he’s batting just .189 with five home runs and 19 RBIs. The good news for the Brewers is that with Rhys Hoskins stationed at first base, Vaughn won’t be expected to assume a major role. At-bats off the bench — or even some time in the minors — could suit the first baseman well.

This is somewhat of an inconsequential transaction, but that’s MLB in June for you. Civale’s journey for the rest of the year will be interesting to monitor, but the real swing factor in this trade is Vaughn’s potential — or lack thereof. Does the 27-year-old possess any untapped ability? It’s possible. He’s spent his whole career in Chicago, and perhaps a new destination will unlock a better player. Only time will tell.

White Sox Grade: B-
