(12) Illinois 52, Western Illinois 3

It’ll be fascinating to see whether Illinois can live up to lofty expectations this season, but last night didn’t give us an answer. That’s no fault of the Fighting Illini, however. Western Illinois is a weak opponent. Duke — in Durham — next week will present more of a challenge.

Under Bret Bielema, Illinois is a defense-focused program, but Luke Altmyer is still key to the team’s success. So far, so good for the passer, as he finished 17-of-21 for 217 yards and three touchdowns in this win.

Gabe Jacas is probably Illinois’ best player, and he was everywhere yesterday. Recording five tackles and two sacks, the senior defended Western Illinois into submission. Jacas has early-round talent for next spring’s draft.

Tarleton State 30, Army 27

This was the first FCS over FBS upset of the season, and it was a dandy.

Army had a once-in-a-generation season for the program in 2024, but that was with Bryson Daily commanding the offense. With Dewayne Coleman replacing him, the Black Knights’ attack suffered.

Coleman went 7-of-12 for 129 yards and two interceptions in this defeat.

Michigan State 23, Western Michigan 6

Michigan State probably should’ve won by more points, but the Spartans have enough to feel positive about. A home game versus Boston College next Saturday night will offer more of a test.

I caught most of the early portion of this game, and Aidan Chiles’ improved poise stood out to me. The game looked slower for the junior, a good sign regarding his progress. Chiles boasts elite potential, and perhaps surrounding him with more weapons will bear fruit.

Chiles finished 17-of-23 for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Chiles’ top target is Nick Marsh, but Middle Tennessee transfer Omari Kelly stole the show in this win. Tallying seven receptions for 75 yards, Kelly displayed a strong rapport with Chiles from the start. Marsh, Kelly and Jack Velling are a dependable trio for Chiles to turn to.

Joe Rossi’s defense should be pleased with its effort last night. Jordan Hall is a good linebacker that missed some time a year ago, but came back strong yesterday.

Hall posted eight tackles and a sack.
