Cubs 6, Rays 4

Matthew Boyd has offered up several uneven starts of late, and yesterday’s outing continued the downward trend. The Cubs will need the southpaw to start in a likely wild-card series, but time is running out for the All-Star to right the ship. Five innings of four-run ball — Boyd’s output in this win — might not be enough to defeat the Padres or Mets in October.

Speaking of October, the opportunity to play baseball next month has all but slipped away from the Rays. Tampa Bay received a first-inning homer from Christopher Morel yesterday, but it was offset by a poor start from Shane Baz.

Baz was effective across half a season in 2024, but he’s regressed as his usage has increased this year. Baz’s ERA is now 5.15 after surrendering five earned runs in this loss.
