Astros sign SP Nate Pearson to one-year, $1.35 million contract
This is a major-league pact for Pearson, a 2017 first-round selection that has struggled to gain footing at the game’s highest level. Thus, the Astros handing him this deal, even at minimal cost, is eyebrow-raising.
Heading into 2026, Houston has an obvious need in the rotation. Framber Valdez is an impending free agent. Multiple starting options have undergone Tommy John surgery. Practically any signing of a starter would’ve been understandable, but not this one.
Pearson pitched to a 9.20 ERA with the Cubs this season and sports a 5.17 career mark. He will — quite obviously — look to improve upon those figures next year.
