2026 five-star SF Anthony Thompson commits to Ohio State

Ohio State needed this talent infusion. The Buckeyes haven’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2022, and a player like Thompson can help the program return to that level. Of course, with Thompson hailing from Ohio, it would’ve been a bad miss if he committed elsewhere. Jake Diebler needed a big-time recruit; this is a good start.

Angels hire Kurt Suzuki as manager

This job was expected to go to Albert Pujols or Torii Hunter, two former Angels. Suzuki, however, is also a former Halo, and his tenure as a special assistant for the club perhaps gave him an edge in landing this position.

There’s risk with this hire. Though involved with the organization, Suzuki has zero managerial or even coaching experience. Los Angeles is far from contention, but a more seasoned skipper could’ve been a better short-term choice. After all, Rocco Baldelli, Brandon Hyde and Bo Porter, all former managers, were linked to this job.

This hire is about the long view, though. Suzuki is well respected within the game, garnering acclaim for his unselfishness and toughness as a catcher. Managing is a different animal, but he should have no problem commanding the clubhouse.
