Giants hire Tony Vitello as manager
This is an outside-the-box hire, as Vitello hails from the college ranks and has zero professional — coaching or playing — experience. Familiarity with the game’s highest level isn’t a be-all, end-all, but it alleviate some risk. In this case however, the Giants are assuming plenty of it, though there’s reason to believe Vitello can break the mold.
At Tennessee, the 47-year-old won and won big, winning the national title in 2024, along with appearing in two additional College World Series. Again, Vitello’s success at the NCAA level guarantees him nothing with the Giants, but his accomplishments should garner him credibility.
The Giants’ managerial job is a solid one. San Francisco has displayed a willingness to spend, but sharing a division with the Dodgers is less than ideal. With an expanded postseason, however, Vitello should have opportunities to guide the struggling franchise back to October.
