Giants fire head coach Brian Daboll

The NFL, above all else, is a results-driven league. At 2-8, the wins stacked too low and the losses stacked too high for a Giants franchise that’s fallen short of contention for far too long.

Now, New York’s next great team won’t be led by Daboll. That’s arguably for the best. After all, Daboll went just 20-40 as the team’s head coach, making the playoffs once. Looking back, that 2022 season was an outlier, as the Giants have been downright bad since.

There’s hope, however. While Daboll won’t be a part of the organization’s next run of success, Jaxson Dart could be. Daboll was at least partly responsible for drafting and developing the first-round rookie, but he won’t oversee Dart’s next stages of progression. That could be problematic. For all his warts, Daboll is a highly-regarded quarterback whisperer, and his touch might’ve benefited Dart’s early-career trajectory.

One player isn’t bigger than an entire franchise, though, and it’s clear the Giants agree. New York is betting more on its ability to find a good head coach than Daboll’s ability to guide Dart. It’s a risky proposition, but something has to give for the desperate Giants.
