The NBA announced yesterday that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won MVP. It’s rare for a player to earn the honor in consecutive years, as it’s only happened 14 times in league history.
Last season, I thought Nikola Jokic deserved MVP. This time around, I have no qualms with Gilgeous-Alexander winning the award, even though he played in just 68 teams. The 27-year-old is the face and key cog on the Thunder — by far the NBA’s best team. If Oklahoma City repeats as champion next month, it’ll hard to argue against its best player also being the best player in the world.
In fact, Gilgeous-Alexander may already hold that belt. Jokic’s Nuggets bowed out in the first round, amid an unspectacular performance from the three-time MVP. Gilgeous-Alexander, however, continues to excel, no matter the circumstances. He’s the most consistent bet in the NBA.
