Titans sign G Peter Skoronski to four-year, $100 million contract extension
Extensions are being signed across the NFL everywhere you look. I suppose I was wrong one week ago ago when I suggested that contract talks across the league would cool after Matthew Bergeron, another guard, inked his deal.
Skoronski is another player that’s earned his keep. A 2023 first-round selection, the left guard was simply average over his first two pro seasons. Something changed last year, as Skoronski performed like one of the best guards in the sport. His pass blocking, in particular, was exemplary, which makes sense considering the Northwestern product played left tackle in Evanston.
Tennessee has invested a fair bit in its offensive line to protect young signal-caller Cam Ward. Skoronski is the best of the bunch, and it’ll be on tackles Dan Moore and JC Latham to hold up their ends of the bargain. If they do, the Titans could sport a decent offense this season.
Bills sign G O’Cyrus Torrence to four-year, $78.4 million contract extension
Friday was a big day for fourth-year guards to cash in. Torrence’s deal was actually signed before Skoronski’s, perhaps setting a benchmark for the Titans blocker to (easily) eclipse.
In reality, Skoronski should’ve blown Torrence’s pact even more out of the water. The Bills right guard is unquestionably a solid starter, though he’s never been a difference maker on the line. At 26, it’s not unreasonable for Torrence to level up, but he probably is who he is at this point.
Buffalo clearly believes in him, however, making the Florida product one of the 10 highest-paid players at his position. It’s quite a reach, as Torrence has been made to look better than he actually is by blocking for Josh Allen and James Cook.
The Bills are guaranteeing Torrence $46 million, which the franchise could may come to regret. In the meantime, they’ll bank on further progression from the 2023 second-round pick.
