The Kentucky Derby was yesterday, in case you hadn’t heard — or watched. The event used to be an adrenaline rush of sorts for me, perhaps even leading to a small wager or two. Those days are in the past.

For starters, I don’t exactly follow horse racing closely. Why would I give even two minutes of my time to a program that I’ll forget about the next day? I don’t need the instant gratification. I don’t need the Kentucky Derby.

Mets sign C Luis Torrens to two-year, $11.5 million contract extension

The Mets are really doubling down on their disappointing core, aren’t they?

Well, not in this case. Torrens is a solid, defensive-minded backup catcher. In fact, the newly-minted 29-year-old was a Gold Glove finalist last season. As expected, his fine work behind the dish has continued this year, though his bat has slipped. Through 30 trots to the plate, the catcher’s OPS is just .467. In limited work, that’s still an acceptable mark for a player that provides so much value on defense.
